‘Some Place Better’ – an extraordinary new play about the care system to be staged in Suffolk

Where is ‘Home’ to you?

Written by Joanna Carrick and Charlotte Jenkins, and commissioned and funded by Suffolk County Council, ‘Some Place Better’ is a fictional play based on the deeply personal diary Charlotte kept during her time spent growing up in the care system. The play explores the hopeful highs, confusing lows, teenage rebellion and everything in-between. Red Rose Chain has developed the show at The Avenue Theatre over the last year. Charlotte and Jo worked together to develop the script, turning Charlotte’s no-holds-barred writing into a truly unforgettable theatre experience for others to learn from and be inspired by.

Councillor Gordon Jones, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills said: “As a corporate parent, Suffolk County Council is committed to empowering and encouraging young people in the county. I am thrilled that we are involved with this project as it provides an important voice for young people. I hope it will be a great success and I would like to thank Charlotte, Joanna and everyone behind the scenes for making the play possible.

“Fostering a child or young person is hugely rewarding and can make a real difference to someone’s life. By providing a supportive home, foster carers help some of Suffolk’s most vulnerable children and young people grow into successful, confident, and resilient young adults. If you are interested in taking that first step towards fostering, I urge you to do so by emailing: fosterandadopt@suffolk.gov.uk or calling: 01473 264800.”

The play above all things is about hope, a porch light at the end of the tunnel. Charlotte’s tenacity of spirit is what guides her on to seek a better life, and there are plenty of laughs to be had even in the darker moments. The play stars Emma Swan and Fizz Waller, fresh from ‘As You Like It’. ‘Some Place Better’ is a wonderful, heartfelt and vulnerable look at the care system from the inside looking out – Charlotte’s story is one that demands to be told and we would love for you to be there.

‘Some Place Better’ runs from 18 – 21 Oct at The Avenue Theatre, Ipswich.
