Black Shuck

Devised by Red Rose Chain Youth Theatre Company
Written and Directed by Kirsty Thorpe & Rachael McCormick

A multi-sensory re-imagining of Suffolk’s scariest myth, BLACK SHUCK that will engage all of your senses.

It’s the 4th annual Black Shuck Festival at The Blyth Hotel, Suffolk where the preparations are almost complete. The performances are being perfected, the breakfast buffet looks amazing, the guests are all checked in and the hotel staff have it all under control. Or at least they think they do until a very unexpected thunder storm…

It is rumoured that on August 4th 1577 a demon dog burst into Blythburgh Church in a clap of thunder, killing two people and leaving a trail of devastation behind him. The scorch marks from Black Shuck’s claws can still be seen on the church door today.

BLACK SHUCK is a Young Roots project funded by Heritage Lottery fund and created in partnership with the Museum of East Anglian Life.

Please note, the show contains the following: Complete darkness, loud noises, special effects, strobe lighting

About the project

The legend

Black Shuck, Old Shuck, Old Shock or simply Shuck is the name given to a ghostly black dog which is said to roam the coastline and countryside of East Anglia. Accounts of the animal form part of the folklore of Norfolk, Suffolk, the Cambridgeshire fens and Essex

Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded a grant of £43,000 through their Young Roots programme to our inclusive youth theatre for their latest project, Black Shuck!

Thanks to National Lottery players, youth theatre members will all work together to explore and interpret the famous Suffolk superstition of the Black Shuck. The project is made up of a theatre production at The Avenue, a film and installation over a year period. Our youth theatre members are extremely excited to explore their local heritage in such a fun and creative way.
