The Chainers receive a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund

About The Show

Ipswich theatre company, Red Rose Chain is celebrating after being awarded £95,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund towards a new project focusing on the 1645 Suffolk witch hunts.

Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, this project will bring together learning from work produced by three targeted community groups and a professional theatre production created by Joanna Carrick.

The first performances of the project are taking place next month with the Red Rose Chainers Youth Theatre company performances of The World Turned Upside Down at the Avenue Theatre in Ipswich.

The play follows a group of young people growing up in Puritan, Ipswich who begin to question what is happening and challenge the persecution which is turning their world upside down.

“We are delighted with the support for developing our thriving heritage community who are passionate about interpreting local history as storytellers through performance, radically improving their wellbeing, confidence and skills. They will inspire and inform wider audiences about this heritage. This was the largest and most fervent witch hunt in history and yet it is virtually unknown by those living here today.”   – Joanna Carrick, Artistic Director

“Encouraging people to discover their local history is positive for not only keeping the heritage alive, but also for people’s well being and strengthening communities.  That is why we are delighted to support Red Rose Chain in this worthwhile project.”  – Anne Jenkins, Director of England, Midlands & East, The National Lottery Heritage Fund
