Further Info

WHAT IS THEATRE IN THE FOREST?

Our beloved summer theatre spectacular!
Theatre in the Forest is famed for making Shakespeare accessible and fun for all, staying true to the text while injecting high energy, dance, music, colour and magic. We welcome 10,000 audience members to our woodland auditorium throughout July/August making it the largest outdoor family theatre event in the region. Theatre in the Forest offers the chance to see Shakespeare as you’ve never seen it before – outdoors and under the stars!

WHERE IS IT HELD?
The event is held amongst the trees in the beautiful woodland clearing at Jimmy’s Farm in Suffolk, on the outskirts of Ipswich. The Farm has an award-winning restaurant that serves pre-theatre dinners and plenty of animals in the wildlife park to check out during your visit before the show! For more info on how to get there, check out our ‘Directions’ tab.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
The magic begins as soon as you step foot inside the auditorium space, with our dedicated and friendly team of volunteers ready to greet you and show you to your seats. The space opens up to 90 minutes before the performance begins, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the unique pre-theatre atmosphere. Audience members are welcome to bring their own picnics, and you may bump into a cast member or two in-character as they like to meet, mingle and joke around during the pre-show!

Seating is all first-come-first-served (with exceptions for those with access needs) and there are 2 options:

camping chair area: closest to the front, LIMITED space.
Audience members bring their own low-backed camping chairs, arrive from 6pm & queue at the gate in order to bag their favourite spaces at the front, once these are gone, they are gone! Also spaces for wheelchair users.

tiered seating: just behind the camping chair area, for those who prefer a higher/more conventional view. The cast move all around the auditorium so wherever you sit you won’t miss any of the action.

For those with access requirements: parking/seating reservations MUST be made in advance, by calling our box office (01473 603388). Seats will be reserved under the surname of the booking party, is it essential that party members arrive in the space by 7pm.

Blankets can be placed on the tarmac (front row) for the children to sit on so they can be involved in all of the fun and surprises!

Then just sit back and enjoy the show! Whether it’s your first time seeing Shakespeare or you’re a seasoned fan, Theatre in the Forest offers a festival-feel that’s fun and makes everyone feel at ease.

In the event of severe weather, you can exchange your tickets hassle-free to a later performance in the run. If you have any other questions, feel free to give our friendly box office team a call on 01473 603388 and they will be happy to help. We are dedicated to making the Theatre in the Forest experience as enjoyable and memorable as possible for everyone!

ANYTHING ELSE?
Jimmy’s Farm is a working farm and you will need to walk across an open field & forest path to access the performance. For the safety and enjoyment of all audience members, this is a no smoking event. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Drink-driving is against the law; if you intend to drink, please designate a driver. Mobile phones must be switched off or set to silent during the show. Jimmy’s Farm is a one way entry and exit, please ensure you exit using the correct road. Don’t forget it will be dark by the end of the performance so we advise you to bring a torch for your walk back to the car park, if you’re in need of any assistance please don’t hesitate to find a steward.

Together with the team at Jimmy’s Farm we are committed to making your Theatre in the Forest experience better and more accessible each year.

Please let our box office know about any access requirements in advance so we can make sure to reserve the best possible parking and seating for you, we want your experience to be as enjoyable as possible. The space is wheelchair accessible and disabled parking spaces/drop off point can be booked in advance to offer the shortest possible distance between your vehicle and the outdoor auditorium.

There is ample free parking on site at Jimmy’s Farm. The farm is only 7 minutes away from Ipswich Train station and is therefore a very reasonably priced taxi ride.

Disabled parking will be available for those with restricted access. Please let our Box Office team know about any accessibility needs you or your party member has in advance, during your booking.

Why not make a day of it? Jimmy’s Farm has loads of family-friendly activities to get stuck into and things to explore! The gates for Theatre In The Forest open at 6pm and you are welcome to check out the animals before the performance. For entry before 6pm normal charges will apply.

In 20 years of Theatre in the Forest we’ve only ever had to cancel a handful of performances due to extreme weather; we carry on in rain and we also provide basic ponchos to keep you dry –  this is to substitute the use of umbrellas within the space – but please feel free to also bring your own waterproofs.
